12/30/2023 0 Comments Ellen raskin newberry awardThe family meets together periodically for a night of reading from the family journals about Capri, a ritual they call 'Caprification'. It's been written about in a journal passed down the family. The Figgs believe that when you die, you go to a place they call Capri. But, Uncle Florence is sick, and getting sicker. Everyone else is ridiculous, embarrassing and needs to just stop so that Mona can stop feeling embarrassed to go out in public. The only person Mona feels close to is her Uncle Florence. Raskin makes hints about what she is supposed to be learning, and she gives us subtle clues here and there, but by that point, I was so fed up with Mona's whining and general annoying-ness that I didn't care. Just the really annoying, get over yourself already type. I think it's supposed to be about her struggle to find her place in life, and accept her family as they are but it always just felt like angst to me, and not the good, realistic kind. The majority of the book focuses on Mona and her angst. Can we move on please?!- Or something like that anyway. Sometimes I'd look at the book and want to shout at the author- Enough already! I get it! They are weird. Her uncle Truman, the human pretzel and sign maker (but horrible speller). Her mom, Sister Figg Newton (Newton being her married name) tap dances. Rather than make her quirky, I'd say she's just a teenager.) It got to be a little bit too much for me. (She's just bitter about life and everything in it. Every single character has something weird, wacky, crazy, or unbelievable about them. I thought that Raskin was trying too hard with this novel, and as a result she missed the mark just about everywhere. She is decidedly normal, hates her family's weirdness, and is terribly embarrassed by what she believes the people of her town, Pineapple say about all those crazy Figgs. Sigh.įiggs and Phantoms is about a family, The Figgs, who are all wildy quirky, except the youngest daughter/niece, Mona. I started this book, not really knowing what to expect about the story itself, but looking forward to it, because I had so enjoyed The Westing Game. So, I was actually quite excited to read Figgs and Phantoms.Īlas. It was wonderfully complex and the characters were simply delightful. I read The Westing Game several years ago, and I really enjoyed it. Four years later, she won the Newbery Award for The Westing Game. This book was originally reviewed on my blog, Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing.įiggs and Phantoms by Ellen Raskin won the Nebery Honor in 1975. With so many other wonderfully magical books available to kids today, this one should be far down the list of choices, despite being a Newbery. Additionally, younger kids may not get silly names and puns (will they laugh at her uncles named Remus and Romulus?).Īdults may pick up the book due to the Newbery Honor Medal on the front, but may very well be taken aback by the language and topics covered. There is a definite psychedelic tinge to the story, and topics such as sex, pornography, and racial slurs are mentioned (the N word is used). While that sounds all fantastic and magical, the book itself is dated. Florence is determined to find him and goes on a journey of literature, music, and self-discovery. But when he suddenly departs for what the family believes to be their afterlife on a place called Capri. The only person she feels that understands her is her Uncle Florence (Italy, of course). Each page is a treat to look at.Ī reissue of the 1974 Newbery Honor winner, Figgs and Phantoms tells the story (dubbed “a mysterious romance or a romantic mystery”) of Mona Lisa Figg Newton, a misfit living in fictional Pineapple, with her crazy family, both the Figgs and the Newtons. This edition has lovely illustrations from Raskin. But she was such a good writer, she should have trusted herself more. It's almost as if Raskin was ashamed to tell a straight story about how children deal with loss. Too bad about the contrived names and the punning. There are allusions to songs that were on the "Hit Parade" in the 1930s and 1940s and laudatory references to the works of Joseph Conrad - not that Conrad was a bad writer, necessarily, but how many people outside of graduate literature classes read Conrad anymore? I'm not sure most undergrads read Conrad-except for Heart of Darkness and that seems old, old, old now. Raskin's fond of making little inside jokes and puns on pop culture, but most of the pop culture references are sadly outdated. I wish Raskin hadn't bothered with the silly names "Figgs" and "Newtons." It detracts from the story, which is very profound, bordering on the philosophical-about a girl's coming to terms with the death of her favorite uncle.

Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. You didn't buy a computer so you could clean caches. But a "cache cleaner" isn't useful for anything. A video editor is useful for making movies. For example, a word processor is useful for writing. Only install software that is useful to you, not (as you imagine) to the computer. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception. The Mac App Store has extensions for the Photos app, and perhaps others, that should be safe. Plugins for Photoshop and similar programs are an obvious exception to this rule. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac," "TuneUpMyMac," and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.Īs a rule, you should avoid software that changes the way other software works. It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface. such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of difficulties with system updates. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all system modifications that you use are compatible. Remove them when they are no longer needed. Don't install such modifications unless they're absolutely necessary. Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it. In fact, don’t rely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. Backing up to a cloud-data service is one way to meet this need, but don't rely exclusively on such backups. Keep at least one backup off site at all times in case of disaster. A copy of a backup doesn't count as another backup all backups must be made directly from the original data. And, as far as we know, the actor who plays Pennywise in the new film adaptation of Stephen King'sItis not a demonic monsterhe's a Swedish actor you should get to know. It’s a shame that we don’t get to hear from the deceased actors, such as John Ritter or Jonathan Brandis, besides a little bit of behind-the-scenes footage. Underneath the clown makeup isn't a sadistic, murderous entity hellbent on tormenting children with their biggest fears, it's Bill Skarsgard. In turn, they helped to perpetuate a mass fear of clowns. Curry humorously told the child actor that “It will save you a little acting, won’t it?” The documentary makes a fascinating point that many children watched this miniseries on television and were freaked out by it. Some of the child actors at the time, such as Tony Dakota, who played Georgie, talk about how frightened they were of Curry on and off the set. Nowadays, it is accepted common knowledge that clowns are scary, and the movie says that a big reason for that is the performance of Tim Curry. However, the film does feel a bit long, with a runtime of two hours and six minutes. Fans of It will eat this up, and heck, even the uninitiated should be intrigued. Pennywise: The Story of It plays like an extended behind-the-scenes bonus feature, with many interviews and stories from the cast and crew. Not all of King’s works have been well-adapted, though, so what went right with this one? The impetus for the fantastic cast and larger-than-usual television budget was, of course, the name behind the title, horror master Stephen King. The stellar actors come first and foremost, with the legendary Tim Curry, fantastic comedic actor John Ritter, and up-and-coming actors like a young Seth Green rounding it all out. Stephen King’s It was an exception to this rule, and the documentary looks at how and why. This documentary, written by Campopiano and Gary Smart, touches on most aspects of the beloved horror production.īack in the day, the term “made for television” usually meant cheesy, low-budget, and forgettable. Co-directors Chris Griffiths and John Campopiano’s Pennywise: The Story of It is a peek behind the curtain of the making of that seminal miniseries and examines the impact it had. Sounds like an anthology series to us.AWARD THIS! 2023 NOMINEE! The original Stephen King’s It (1990) was a landmark achievement for both horror and pop culture in general. There's a danger something like that might feel repetitive (Pennywise resurfaces, kills some kids, goes away, repeat!), but in the right hands – and if they can get Bill Skarsgård to reprise the role – then it could prove just as much of a horror treat as It Chapter One and Two.Īnd of course in the book, IT only takes the form of Pennywise for a part of its long history. Now, that doesn't mean Muschietti will explore it ("there's nothing on the table"), it just means that the scope is there to continue the It world in maybe a spin-off movie or even a TV spin-off. So you can imagine the amount of material," he told io9. He's been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. It’s those little incidental details that flesh out a game world, providing background and context – and it’s these things that are completely lacking in Syberia 3. You’ve got a never-ending laundry list of things to do – you tick one thing off and it’s straight onto the next.Įlements in the game world – characters and objects – are either essential to advance or a complete waste of time. The problems don’t end there – also ripped wholesale from the previous games is the outdated gameplay. Sharon Mann reprises her role as Kate Walker from the previous games, although here her voice sounds a little too old for the twenty-nine-year-old heroine.Īlthough Kate sounds a lot better than many of the other characters – almost all the characters we meet are supposed to be European, yet only some characters have European accents – the rest have this weird American accent that just sounds off. On the other hand, voicework is not great – it’s too stilted and often sounds unnatural. It reworks tracks from previous Syberia games into something that sounds new and fresh. Syberia 3’s soundtrack, composed by Inon Zur, is actually quite beautiful. Don’t expect miracles though – it doesn’t hold aĬandle to the best-looking Switch games. Mode the game looks better – the smaller screen and lower native resolution help These enhancements bring Syberia 3 more in line visually with modern games and also help the game to look stylistically closer to its predecessors – so it’s a shame they’re missing on the Switch. Switch’s docked mode at least, things just don’t hold up. Step back – Syberia I and II looked great in their time but Syberia 3 is years behind today’s heavy hitters. Well visually the game actually feels like a Syberia II was a worthy successor and almost as good only let down by slightly less memorable locations and some pacing issues – the Monastery and the Youkol Village were memorable for all the wrong reasons!Īnd now we have the latest game – it’s been thirteen years since Syberia II hit store shelves, so what’s changed? Visually Appealing I really enjoyed the original Syberia – it was a charming, offbeat adventure in a world full of clockwork Automatons and living mammoths that felt like it had been dreamt up in a child’s imagination. This is The Subtext and I’m Dan – join me on a journey full of ups and downs as we talk about the Nintendo Switch version of Syberia 3. Traveler with no destination” – that’s the insightful piece of wisdom aĬharacter shares with series protagonist Kate Walker near the end of Syberia 3,Īnd sadly it’s a sentiment that couldn’t be more accurate to this game but also, Throughout the game, the Inquisitor needs to make important decisions that might change the state of Thedas and have long-lasting consequences. Depending on the Inquisitor's race and class, additional dialogue options are available for players to select. A dialogue wheel offers several dialogue options for the player to select. In Inquisition, players can interact with numerous non-playable characters, some of whom can be recruited as agents for the Inquisition. As the Inquisitor, players deploy agents and troops of the Inquisition to complete various text-based operations through their primary advisers, which influences the rewards and time requirements of the effort undertaken. At Skyhold, the Inquisition's base of operations, players can access the war table to unlock locations, receive rewards, gain influence and/or progress the story. Players can also collect codex entries, allowing them to have a deeper understanding about the world of Thedas. In addition, the player can complete side missions, fetch quests, collect magical shards, and solve Astrarium puzzles. Performing these acts will grant players resource points in Influence, which can be used to unlock global upgrades for the Inquisition named Inquisition perk, and Power, which is required for progressing the story and unlocking new areas. In each hub world, players can complete side activities such as sealing Fade rifts and capturing keeps or forts, establish camps, which are used to provide fast travel and resupply points. The various regions that make up the game world do not scale in level, meaning players can be too weak or strong for the enemies found in a region. To allow players to navigate the game's world faster, mounts, creatures players can ride, are introduced. Players can access a cloud-based online interactive story creator called Dragon Age Keep, and detail the major plots of the previous two Dragon Age games and import a world state in Inquisition without requiring replay of the initial games. Players customize the Inquisitor's physical appearance and gender, among other things. At the beginning of the game, the player chooses a race for their player character: human, dwarf, elf, or Qunari, a playable race for the first time in the series. A sequel, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, is currently in development.ĭragon Age: Inquisition is an action role-playing game similar to its predecessors. Several narrative downloadable content (DLC) packs were released to support Inquisition. It was awarded numerous accolades and nominated for more, including Game of the Year by several gaming publications. Commercially, it was one of the most successful games released by BioWare. The game received some criticism for its filler content, technical issues, tactical view, and aspects of its narrative. Upon release, the game received critical acclaim, with critics praising its exploration gameplay, combat, visuals, writing, characters and customization. Officially announced in September 2012 as Dragon Age III: Inquisition, the game was released worldwide in November 2014 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Trevor Morris composed the game's soundtrack, replacing Inon Zur, the composer used for the previous games. They had to crunch extensively during development, and because of hardware limitations on older generation consoles several gameplay features had to be cut. Having begun development in 2011, BioWare used EA DICE's Frostbite 3 engine to power the game, though this created many development challenges for the team. Ultimately, BioWare wanted the third Dragon Age game to combine the elements of the first two games in the series. BioWare sought to address player feedback for Dragon Age II as a major goal, which influenced the design decisions of its sequel. The release of Dragon Age II was met with a mixed reception from players who lamented the loss of the complexity of the first game, Dragon Age: Origins (2009). Players control the Inquisitor or their companions mainly from a third-person perspective, although a traditional role-playing game top-down camera angle is also available. Dragon Age: Inquisition 's gameplay is similar to its predecessors, although it consists of several semi- open worlds for players to explore. The story follows a player character known as the Inquisitor on a journey to settle the civil unrest in the continent of Thedas and close a mysterious tear in the sky called the "Breach", which is unleashing dangerous demons upon the world. The third major game in the Dragon Age franchise, Inquisition is the sequel to Dragon Age II (2011).
